Synopsis:
As the UK moves towards its net zero emissions target, decarbonising the transport sector is a major priority. A vast majority of local authorities in the UK have declared climate and/or ecological emergency. Their scope 1 emissions are primarily from the heating of buildings, waste collection and maintenance fleets. With mandatory separate collection of food waste coming into force, these local authorities who are already looking into upgrading their existing diesel-run fleet to reduce emissions, are expecting to buy new ones for separate food waste collection. They will also be looking into ways of processing/disposing of the collected organic waste.
This collectively presents a fantastic opportunity for the anaerobic digestion (AD) industry – via additional digestion capacity and low-emission waste collection vehicles needed. There is an opportunity here for the local authorities to meet their regulatory as well as climate obligations. The AD industry is at the heart of this opportunity, with its potential to convert organic waste into renewable biomethane that can be used as a transport fuel.
In this webinar, experts will discuss biomethane production capacity, distribution infrastructure readiness, real-world case studies, vehicle manufacturer perspectives, and local authority feasibility considerations for transitioning to biomethane-powered waste collection vehicles.
The webinar will examine how AD and biomethane can enable low-carbon heavy transport in the UK while delivering co-benefits across waste management and other sectors. Speakers will address questions around scaling up AD infrastructure to power municipal waste fleets, challenges and solutions for local authorities looking to adopt this approach, and the broader role of biomethane in sustainable transport.
